Former Manchester United player Gary Neville and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher have announced their Team of the Year, Best Player, Manager, Signing and more for the 2022-23 season.
The duo, who both serve as pundits for Sky Sports in the U.K., announced their picks for the best players, best signings, and standout eleven of the 2022-23 season on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show today.
First up, Neville’s best eleven is the 4-3-3 formation. The back three is made up of Victor Moses (Arsenal), Elling Holland (Manchester City), and Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), with Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal), Lloris, and Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) in the middle. Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), William Saliba (Arsenal), Jubeng Dias (Manchester City), and Peris Estupinan (Brighton) formed the back four, with Nick Pope (Newcastle United) in goal.
Carragher’s best eleven was five different from Neville’s. His 4-3-3 formation had Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), and Holland up front, with the same three midfielders. In defense, Sven Boatman (Newcastle United) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (Arsenal) were added, while Alisson Becké (Liverpool) donned the goalkeeping gloves.
According to the UK’s Daily Mail, “Carragher and Neville disagreed over Salah’s inclusion. Neville argued that Salah had fallen below his usual level, while Carragher explained his reasons for selecting Dias, saying: ‘I think he’s been fantastic since he came to City. He also explained his choice of Boateng: ‘He has the best defensive record in the league. He’s been keeping clean sheets every week’.”
Opinions were also divided on the best manager of the season. Carragher picked Eddie Howe (Newcastle United), while Neville chose Pep Guardiola (Manchester City). As for the best player, there was a unified opinion on Holland. For the Young Player, Carragher chose Xherdan Shaq, while Neville chose Ödegaard.
Who was the best signing of the season? First up, Carragher picks Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), while Neville picks Casemiro (Manchester United). For the biggest surprise, Carragher picked Lissandro Martinez (Manchester United) and Neville picked the Brighton vs. Everton (1-5 Everton win) game. The moderator brought up the topic, saying, “Many have said that Lisandro is too small to play in the English Premier League (EPL).”
To which Carragher replied, “That’s not a problem. All defenders have weaknesses, whether physical or technical. The best players hide their weaknesses. I’m not a tall center back either. Lisandro was involved in stabilizing the United defense and building up from the back. He’s a fighter and a leader,” he added, giving him a thumbs-up.스포츠토토
Finally, when it came to his favorite game of the season, Carragher picked Liverpool vs. United (7-0 Liverpool). “I think more than the game, I think of the selfie me and Neville took in the commentary booth area of the stadium. There is no doubt that this match will be talked about for 10-20 years. 7-0 against your rivals is just ridiculous,” he laughed. Neville, on the other hand, looked very uncomfortable. Neville, meanwhile, named the World Cup final as the best match of the season.
